Fears of being branded ‘racist’ make public services ignore Female Genital Mutilation

By David Frankenhuis

During a recent conference in the Swedish city of Gothenburg on the topic of female genital mutilation (FGM), experts dealing with the issue in Europe revealed some alarming facts and trends. Not only is the number of girls falling victim to the cultural tradition increasing, but they are getting younger as well. To make matters worse, many professionals working in health and social services in European countries do not report cases of sexual disfigurement fearing that, if they were to do so, they might be singled out as ‘racists’.

Angie Marriott, a former British nurse and independent consultant with over thirty years professional experience in issues such as honour-based violence, forced marriage, and FGM, was one of the speakers at the congress. More than 300 employees from Sweden’s social services, police, schools, and medical institutions attended the meeting which took place yesterday and had been organised by the County Council and the Västra Götaland Region, Göteborgs Posten reports.

Marriott told the attendants that:

“There exists a great fear among people in authority to be branded ‘racist’. That fear, coupled with the fact that we cannot talk to each other because of language deficiencies, are the biggest obstacles in the fight against FGM.”

In the United Kingdom alone, Marriott claims, some 65,000 girls under the age of 13 are at risk of falling victim to FGM. Less than two months ago, a British charity warned of so-called ‘female genital mutilation parties’ where girls are being cut in cities across England. Researchers working at the City University of London in 2015 estimated there were some 137,000 women who have been subjected to FGM in England and Wales alone, the BBC reports.

‘Midwives flown in for mutilation-parties’

In order to counter the problem, the British government, in 2015, made it mandatory for health workers to report FGM. Since then, some 5700 FGM cases have been registered in the UK. Marriott claims:

“The figures should be much higher,” Many people think that genital mutilation is only happening abroad. Today, we know that this is not the situation. We know that midwives are flown in and cut the girls during ‘mutilation-parties.”

FGM in Sweden

Since the Swedes have witnessed an influx of migrants from countries such as Somalia, Egypt, and Eritrea, where FGM is part of culture and religion, the Scandinavian country is no stranger to the phenomenon.

Johannes Leidinger, head of a hospital in Stockholm, pointed at a worrying trend:

“The number of genital mutilation cases is increasing globally. We also see that female genital mutilation is carried out on increasingly younger children. Therefore, we must intensify the fight against female genital mutilation even more.”

According to Swedish public health authorities, some 38,000 women and girls in Sweden have fallen victim to FGM. Even though the practice became part of criminal law in 1982, only two cases led to convictions.

And so these little girls have to suffer this outrageous procedure.

Leftist Liberals. That is what is wrong with Europe.

    • Jack

Almost everything. We lost the best of our masculinity in two world wars, and with it our societal cojones.

What this article did not point out is little girls have died from this all over the world. They often use old razors and infection sets in and in remote locations those who get infected die there’s no place to take them. Enough of this worried about being called “racist” think of the child this is done to without anethesia we don’t need barbaric practices perpetrated on children and we remain quiet.

  • Manolita

    Same thing in Germany.

How can we fight this if their own mothers who are supposed to love them hold them down during the process. Sickening.

  • Where are the feminists of the years 60-70-80 ??? Where are the universal men’s rights declared during the french revolution? Where are the marxist activists declaring that religion is opium of the populations? There’s no Europe, in the laws, in the political activities, but only an emerging casbha-oriented society….

    • Janette Wells

Absolutely! Where are the women like Germaine Greer (“Sociologist” and 1970’s author of “The Female Eunuch”) in this debate? Nowhere – to their eternal shame dishonour and discredit. Completely useless excuse-makers calling FGM a cultural practice and therefore no business of ours in the West. Aayan Hirsi Ali is worth a million of these useful idiots.

Feminism is only addressing issues where moral fibre is not a requirement I

Real Islamic practices and objectives are being hidden and far too many western politicians are either being bought by oil money or deceived by Taqiyya – the Islamic condoned practice of deception and lying and the mis-applied false notion of ‘religious persecution’ of Islam which western media promotes daily. Females in Islam are considered property of their father, eldest brother or husband; or they are whores. The insidious media promotion of the faux notion of a peaceful Islam has intimidated all but the most courageous from calling out the barbaric practices and cannons of Islam and it’s intention of destroying our Christian democratic governments and replacing them with Islamic religious dictatorships in which all women are chattels. At the same time truly peaceful Islamic communities and countries are being either bought and sold into line with Wahhabi versions of extreme and brutal Islam or they are being wiped out unmercifully. The only real impediment to this Wahhabi doctrine is the schism in Islam between Shia and Suni versions of Islam. We will eventually wake up, I hope its in time to prevent our decline into religious hell and a massive increase in social violence. Not all Muslims are part of this world wide conspiracy, but those not on board are so weak or marginalized and/or fearful of the violence which accompanies resistance to Wahhabi inspired Islamisation and the violence which accompanies it.
Our political leaders will eventually wake up and grow some courage, I hope its not too late!

The thought crime of “racism” is wreaking havoc. The term is ill-defined and people are charged (and prosecuted) for it when no actual racism has occurred or was intended. It has become a great taboo, a witch-hunt, a political smearing weapon and we are paying the price in the coin of silence and fear. Important issues are beyond discussion because people’s fears of being branded racist are so feverish.

      The thought crime of “racism”

Who would have believed in these “enlightened ” times that George Orwell’s 1984 would be prophetic of our future in Europe.

We already have the “thought police” – all “unacceptable” criticism is being suppressed, and stating simple obvious truths is now a hate crime. Our freedom of speech is being forfeited. The pathway to totalitarian dominance of western societies.

You make a lot of assumptions about the reason “Why”. Ref: the complete domination of women by insecure men. How about, males have nothing to do with this practice and generations of women are doing it to their little girls simply: “because it was done to them”. Please remember – We are not dealing with people who have critical thinking capacity. If they think the Quran said it, they follow along protesting loudly that they should be able to do it. Many people in these countries are illiterate, even in their own language.

    • jeff page

Point taken Bronwyn, it is well known that this mutilation is carried out by women, probably the local elder, a grandmother, friend of the family, in some cases a mother. Men, as far as I am aware don’t appear to be objecting though, do they? The Quran/Koran which they all follow (religiously) was apparently written by Mohammad their “prophet” and guess what? He was a man. Also this practice is carried out by some non Muslims.

It is highly likely that these women believe that in doing so they will protect their daughters from the “lure” of promiscuity, and save them from honor killing. They are also saving themselves the shame of having produced a “bad girl”. Of course this is also bad logic, as much “bad behavior” is due to male relatives molesting girls. One case of honor killing in Israel: When a “palestinian” mother found her son had been raping her daughter, she demanded the girl commit suicide. When the daughter refused, the mother stabbed her to death while she slept. Abhorrent.

  • Old Hottie

This barbaric practice is now better tolerated for fear of offending religious sensibilities. How absurd is that?

  • Jack

Islam has not changed since the 6th century. While many Muslims are peaceful, Islam is not – the Koran preaches violence to its own and especially to non-Muslims. It is antithetical to Christian beliefs and even those of the non-believing majority. The PC brigade deny this for their own benefit. It must be expunged from Western society. I do not know how this can be achieved, but achieved it must be, for its teachings are evil!

  • nilro

Eliminate the source of the problem and that being a bronze age religion. Is the human race so backward and fearful?

  • William Henwood

So sad that we do not have the leadership to address the problem.
The British PM has a history of talking tough and then doing nothing

  • conan_drum

Many cultural practices are no longer practised (except by Islam that puts the cult in cultural)
Maiming a girl for life to theoretically reduce her sexual desires and pleasure in sex, so that she will not ‘fall into sin’, is not a cultural practice but a religious one and a male dominated society one also. Are males having their penis tips severed so that they will not ‘fall into sin’?

  • Chanah Shapira-Stillman

Welcome to “intersectionality” where nary a feminist will criticize Muslim practices. Not FGM, not child marriage, not rape, not wife-beating, not honor killings, not grooming young non-Muslim girls for prostitution–have I left anything out? We are looking at the fatal “intersection” of wrong-headed, self-righteous impotence among power elites and a plainly immoral and oppressive values set pervasive among a population increasingly dominating the landscape. Spine, anyone?
